Being the first in South East Asia, a team of researchers lead by Prof. Dr Abdul Rahman Mohamed from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) discovered the continuous production method of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) using rotation reactor. The method developed is reported to be significantly more efficient than the previous methods used. CNTs are widely applied as composite material in production of biomedical and electronic end products, electrochemical devices, sensor and probes. Due to its mechanical strength, lightweight and ideal electronic properties, CNTs are highly in demand. Japan, China, United States and Korea are among the countries that currently producing this valuable material. Using this improved method, the production cost of CNTs is reduced from USD 100-700 to USD 15-35 for each gram with production capacity of 1000g a day. This system is reported to be environmental friendly as it operates at atmospheric conditions with minimum reactor space required. Prof. Abdul Rahman together with Dr. Chai Siang Piao, Seah Choon Ming, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lee Keat Teong and Yeoh Wei Ming contributed to the success of this project. Currently, CNTs are produced using this improved method by Advance Nanocarbon Sdn. Bhd., a spin-off company of USM. Multiple international awards have been attained by Advance Nanocarbon including a Gold Medal at the International Jury of IENA in 2009 as well as a Special Prize for Technical Culture-Creation and a Gold Medal at the 33rd International Exhibition of Invention, New Techniques and Products in Geneva in 2005. The success of this project marks the ...

Scientific Malaysian is proud to announce the launch of our Project Collab initiative, a project to foster research collaboration among scientific researchers in Malaysia and abroad. This is a great opportunity to highlight the research profiles of Malaysian researchers to the world. What is Project Collab? Project Collab is part of our effort to foster research collaborations between scientific researchers in Malaysia and abroad. As part of this project, we compile the research profiles of participating scientists and their contact details into a directory style listing – to make it easier for other researchers to browse or search for someone to collaborate with. Participating scientists will also be featured in our free Scientific Malaysian Magazine, which is published 3 times a year and circulated worldwide. Who can take part in Project Collab? Malaysian researchers working abroad Malaysian and non-Malaysian researchers working in Malaysia Non-Malaysian researchers working overseas (who are interested in collaborating with researchers in Malaysia) Funding bodies with research grant for local/overseas Malaysian researchers can also advertise their funding opportunities here. How to take part in Project Collab? Project Collab Directory - Browse and search our directory of researchers here. Get listed on Project Collab Directory – Submit your listing here if you would like to be featured in our directory. Photo credit: Charis Loke

Commemorative Stamps and First Day Cover of the Malaysian Antarctic Research Programme (MARP) was launched by Datuk Seri Panglima Dr. Maximus Johnity Ongkili, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) at the National Science Centre, Bukit Kiara early March. In conjunction with Tahun Sains Gerakan Inovasi 2012 (Science Driven Innovation Year 2012), the philatelic launch recognizes Malaysia’s involvement in the Antarctic Treaty System (ATS). Malaysia’s effort in preserving Antarctic was first voiced at the United Nations General Assembly in 1983. This effort was furthered by the formation of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia Task Force on Antarctic Research in 1997. Since 1999, 31 research projects, 46 expeditions and more than 100 Malaysian scientists collaborating with researchers from other parts of the world have been involved in this effort. Other than being part of ATS, Malaysia is a member of Scientific Committee of Antarctic Research (SCAR), Asian Forum for Polar Sciences (AFOPS), Antarctica and the Global Climate System (AGCS), International Antarctic Institute (IAI), Modeling and Observational Studies of Antarctic Katabatics Action Group (MOSAK) as well as a member of Standing Committee on Antarctic Data Management (SCADM). Marking the continuous effort of Malaysia’s involvement in Antarctic, Malaysia scientists will soon be able to conduct research in Antarctic even without permits from international bodies upon approval of the by the Parliament. Ongkili said the Sultan Mizan Polar Research Fellowship Award, a proposed research fellowship focusing on climate issues, aspects of life sciences and energy will be brought forward for cabinet approval in the ...

Other members of Scientific Malaysian should take this opportunity to ask them questions about the working and research experience in Universiti Sains Malaysia. I am sure many of us would like to know more about USM; about their strategies to attract overseas talent and to prevent brain drain from Malaysia.
